WIC Food Supplement Program
The special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), is a nutrition program for low-income pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding Women, Infants and Children (to age five) who are at nutritional risk. The purpose of the WIC program is to prevent health problems and to improve the health of participants during critical times of growth and development.
NCHS Women, Infant & Children Supplemental Nutrition Program (WIC) maintains a high participation rate. Breastfeeding promotion and support are identified as a health care priority because it can reduce health care costs by enhancing the health and well-being of the mother and infant. NCHS-WIC is a model in breastfeeding education and support. This State of California's WIC Program average breastfeeding rate is only 12.6% statewide, while NCHS-WIC's is one of the highest rates in the state at 35.3% (March 2009).
Our program proudly serves 11,273 participants per month (March 2009) or over 97,000 nutrition education contacts per year. NCHS WIC operates eight offices in North San Diego County. The location of these offices and their proximity to the health centers of NCHS facilitate mutual referrals, access to care and customer convenience.
